Volunteer FAQ Q - How is the Sherrills Ford Terrell Fire & Rescue department different from other volunteer fire departments in the area? A - Sherrills Ford – Terrell Fire & Rescue provides fire, rescue and medical services to the community out of four stations with 16 pieces of apparatus. Apparatus includes a ladder truck and fire boat used to cover incidents that occur within 116 miles of shoreline in our district. We encourage and respect volunteer training in and outside of the department.
Q - Does it require a lot of personal time to be a volunteer? A - More time is demanded from you as you go through your initial first year due to training. After that, you could set your own times, but maintain 36 hours of training, 4 business meeting, and 50 calls ran in a year.
Q - Do I have to be a Sherrills Ford – Terrell resident in order to be a member? A - Sherrills Ford – Terrell Fire & Rescue has a 49 sq mile fire district that you must live within to be a member.
Q - How old do I have to be to volunteer? A - Sherrills Ford offers a junior volunteer program which you can join at the age of 15. At the age of 18 you can become a regular member.
Q - I plan to only be in the area for one year. Can I still be a volunteer? A - Sherrills Ford – Terrell Fire & Rescue does not want to turn away any individual that wants to help their community, but understand that there is investment cost that we have to put forward for your training. We would have to sit down and discuss the situation.
Q - Is it okay that I have no experience? A - We don’t expect you to have experience coming into this field. We will provide you with the education that you will need. Q - Where will I go for training? A - This station has multiple NC State Qualified Instructors in house and will try to keep training here. Some training may require you to go to local colleges.
Q - Who pays for my required training? A - Sherrills Ford – Terrell Fire & Rescue pays 100% of required training for members.
Q - I am a firefighter in another state, are my certifications transferrable to North Carolina? A - If the state you are coming from is International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board accredited (National Board of Fire Service Professional Qualifications)
Q - Do I need to be trained as both a firefighter and an emergency medical technician to be a member? A - We will allow volunteers to come in and receive fire fighting training only.
Q - How often do I have to be available for alarm responses? A - There are not specific schedule requirements, but you are responsible to make 5% of call volume.
Q - I have heard that fire departments have a military-like structure, is this true? A - Yes, we are paramilitary organization. We have a command structure that we go by, and at times you will take orders.
Q - Do I need to purchase my own protective gear and equipment? A - No, all necessary protective gear and equipment will be provided to you at no cost.
Q - I’ve heard that firefighters use their own vehicles to go to fires, is this true? A - Yes, after your probationary period we will allow you to display red lights and respond directly to the scene of emergency in your personal vehicle. Q - How often do you accept new members? A - We accept applications at any time.
Q - What do I have to do to become a volunteer? A - The first step in becoming a volunteer is to come by and meet us and submit an application.

The department will notify qualified applicants of their candidacy by November 7th, 2011. When notified, the candidate will be given an appointment to take the required written test and the Certified Physical Agility Test (CPAT). An overview of the CPAT is available on our web site. Upon satisfactory completion of both, the candidate may then be given an interview appointment. The candidate who is selected for hire from the process will start as soon as available.
